Bathroom floors are raised, and there are many reasons for this. There is constant use of water in the bathroom and the presence of moisture can cause a lot of problems in the house.
Why Are Bathroom Floors Raised? Bathroom floors are raised due to different structural arrangements inside the floor that increase its height. In addition, it helps in the proper drainage of water in the hose. Furthermore, it protects the walls and ceiling from moisture by the addition of tiles to the floor.
The moisture can damage the ceiling and wall structure. It will also peel off the paints and wallpaper in the bathroom.
Different factors increase the floor height of the bathroom. These factors make it slightly higher than the other floor of the house.
The presence of excess water increases humidity and moisture level inside it. These two are the villain of the bathroom.
It will not only affect the structure of the restroom. But also the room associated with it.
Some prevention techniques apply in the construction of them that increase the floor height than other rooms.
Inclination towards the drainage
The shower area must have raised edges so that the water effectively flows towards the drainage hose.
This sloping introduces to protect the floor from damages. Distinct kinds of waterproof titles are used to protect the floor from water incorporation.
If the water gets inside the flooring, it will cause the wooden base to expand, and the dimension of the bathroom starts to change.
Every time shower operates, there is an increased amount of water puddle inside it. This water puddle increases the chance of mold growth.
It will also increase the chances of water entering the drywalls and deteriorates them. Molds can damage the ceiling and the walls.
The sloped floor makes water drainage easy and makes sure that there is no water pool inside the shower area. It is economical because you can save money for future floor fixing.
There is at least one or a half-inch slope height installs in the bathroom. It depends on the shape and the floor of your bathroom.
One purpose must keep in mind that the slope must drain all the water to the hose. You want to have a level floor inside the washroom.
You can fix this by installing good titles and ramps that can level your floor.
Tiles raised floor
Another reason is the introduction of the lifted tile floor. This the new flooring technique through which you can achieve different benefits.
A raised level can help in keeping the tiles warm during winter. They also help in repairing and maintenance.
It is easy to repair wiring and plumbing pipes on this floor. It is easy to fix and protected well. It provides better access to the electrical and plumbing joints.
They can save energy by boosting thermal insulation between the raised tiles and the deeper floor. It can also increase the resale price of your house.
The techniques and designs help to conserve energy encourage by peoples. You can construct them easily in your old bathrooms because they are less expensive.
The construction of a whole new flooring with different layers in the foundation conserves more time, effort, and expenses than this one.
Base inside the bathroom
Bathrooms construct on a wooden base. In this wooden base, plumbing pipes and wires of different appliances pass.
The height of plumbing pipes must be higher so that they can drain the waste effectively. The soil pipe’s height must be 5m or more for proper drainage.
The heating system is also passing from the wooden base this all factors increase the floor height.
There are other layers present inside it like concrete or mortar layer, tiles, plywood, etc. These all factors increase the floor height of the bathroom.
Corroded plumbing
The floor contains pipes of water, sewage, and drainage become hard, polluted, corroded.
The hardness results due to different factors i-e the age, expansion due to temperature, external pressure force, the invasion of tree roots.
Sometimes the pipes burst that increasing the water leakage in the wooden base. Due to this happening base expands in size.
These factors increase the pressure on the concrete. The concrete starts to break. It increases the pressure on the tiles, and the floor becomes raised.
Weather play role
The weather also causes the expansion of plumbing pipes. When the weather becomes cold, pipelines become contracted due to the coldness of the outside.
After turning on the heating system, the structure of ducts changes, and they start to expand. This problem results in an unsmooth floor.
The ground becomes lifted due to continuous expansion and contraction. It will affect the layers as well as the wooden base.
Due to this reason, cracks began to take place in the internal structure of the floor and walls.
That is why it is essential to protect it from leaks and moisture because it can damage the internal structure.
Layers present inside the bathroom floor
The bathroom floor does not need to level, but it must slope towards the hose.
The only thing that must consider is the floor angled in a direction the drainage of water does not cause any issues.
This floor is in continuous use of the water for bathing and cleaning purposes. The angle of this floor is approximately 45 to 47 degrees.
It will not affect the tiles for their installation and move the puddles towards the drainage hose. The most crucial factor is that the floor must be flat and smooth.
There are no ups and downs present on this angled floor. You can check this by measuring the difference between the two tiles.
This difference is to know as lippage. The platform height increases due to different layers present beneath them.
The first one is the tiles that are present at the top of other layers. The thin-set mortar is present below the first layer.
The layer of cement backer board is also present beneath the tiles and thin-set. These layers of different materials are present on the foundation.
This layering makes its floor higher than the other rooms. In some houses, there is plywood used below the tiling that increases the floor height.
These all factors make the floor inside the bathroom higher than the other rooms of the house.
This layering introduces to protect the wooden foundation from moisture penetrating it. The protection helps in lowering the risk of molds and mildew production.
Poor waterproofing leads to moisture build-up that causes drywall leakage.
