Common Problems with Bathroom Shower

Many people add different showers in their bathrooms depending on their preferences and personal choices. The different types also have the distinct design of shower heads for water movement, including rainfall and waterfall.

Common problems with bathroom shower include dirty shower heads, loose shower heads, clogged drains, poor water pressure, leakage of the faucet, and broken pipes. Moreover, you can also face issues of bad smell, rusty components, inconsistent water temperature, and limited design.

Considering the length of walk-in showers with their design is necessary because shorter lengths cause problems for taller people.

Bathroom Shower Problems Solutions
Dirty shower heads Clean with vinegar solution
Loose shower head Tight screws with screw wrench
Clogged shower drains Use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda
Water pressure issues Unclog the plumbing system and check the leakage
Bad smell Remove bacterial biofilm with baking soda
Rusty shower components Clean with baking soda and lemon juice
Inconsistent water temperature Check the thermostat valve and heater installation

Dirty shower heads

The shower head is the fixture present on the upper part of the shower for water flow. These are of various designs to change the direction of water flow.

These fixtures become dirty and cause clogging of small sieves. In addition, the water cannot come through them sufficiently because of blocked holes.

The clogging problem occurs due to the accumulation of minerals like calcium and lime. Over time running hard water leaves the residues of minerals, and these residues form a thick deposit.

In addition, you can see the blocked sieves due to fungus accumulation on the sides. You can resolve the clogging issues by using toothpicks to remove solid minerals from nozzles.

Moreover, you can also do this procedure by removing this part and dipping it in an acidic solution. Use the vinegar solution because it is mildly acidic and cannot damage the steel material.

Loose shower head

Walk-in shower heads are attached to the walls using brackets, which become loose after some years.

In addition, the mounting brackets are attached with screws and nuts that become loose and cause wobbling problems.

It irritates people because the bathroom shower keeps coming down when you put them on bracket mounts. This is because it is connected to the water and plumbing pipe.

The loose fixtures also increase the risk of water leakage and wastage. These become loose due to their old age and poor fixing.

Unexperienced plumbers do not fix them correctly, and these start to come off from the brackets or plumbing system, depending on their types.

You can resolve the problem by tightening the screws in a counterclockwise direction. I prefer a screw wrench for tightening because it provides a better grip.

Clogged shower drains

Shower drains are present on their middle bottom end for quick water removal. Sometimes the clogging of drains occurs, which causes difficulty in water movement in the sewer system.

Water remains on the floor or takes a long time to move and ruin the subfloor materials. The drain clogs occur from soap scum and grease accumulation from body oils and lotions.

Over time skin residues can also build up on the drain surface and decrease the water flow through them.

In addition, many people do shave while taking a shower, and hair clogs the drains. You can unclog the drains by pouring the bucket of warm water.

Furthermore, mix an equal portion of vinegar and baking soda and add them to drains to break the bonds of the clogging agent.

You can also use the plunger after removing the drain cover.

Water pressure issues

Fluctuation in water pressure is common in bathroom showers due to faulty plumbing systems. The low level of water in the tanks decreases the water pressure.

Fluctuated water pressure problem also comes due to leaky pipes in the plumbing system. the leakage in pipes comes from age and corrosion.

In addition, clogging of plumbing systems or pipes with lime and calcium deposit is common due to the flow of hard water through them.

The narrowing of pipes restricts the water movement and decreases their proper flow through the shower head.

You can resolve the problem by checking the leakage in connected pipes and sealing the affected area.

Moreover, it is also necessary to unclog the plumbing system for smooth water movement with the same pressure.

Bad smell

Sometimes you can feel the offensive or sewer odors while taking a shower. The issue comes when the bathroom is in less use, and the p-trap becomes dry, allowing the sewer gas to come up.

Moreover, biofilm also develops on the floors near the shower areas. The thin biofilm layer comes due to the accumulation of bacterial species.

The biofilm layer develops due to excessive water use, soap scum, conditioners, and body oils or lotions. Sometimes these components also travel toward the drains, and you can feel the smell.

You can get rid of bacterial biofilm by using acetic acid. Pour it on the affected area and scrub it on the affected surface for 2 to 3 minutes.

I prefer baking soda to remove bacterial biofilms because these are easily available in homes.

Rusty shower components

Rust on its components is due to weak metals and can oxidize when it comes in contact with water.

Water contains high iron content, and sedimentation on different fixtures changes their color. These become dark brown in the shade due to iron accumulation.

These brown stains are not due to rust but are similar to rust. Iron and sediment stains are common on shower heads because of continuous water exposure.

You can remove these stains by mixing the baking soda and lemon juice. Spray the solution on the affected area and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Scrub the surface with a sponge and then rinse it with fresh water.

Inconsistent water temperature

Sometimes you can face the problem of inconsistent water temperature from the showers. It occurs due to improper flow rate of the water.

The insufficient water supply to the heating element causes the sudden flow of cold water.

Moreover, heating devices are mostly made of metal, which can rust over time.

The working efficiency of corroded parts decreases, and you can see fluctuation in water temperature after turning on the hot and cold faucets simultaneously.

You can face the problem of inconsistent water temperature due to mineral deposits on the heating element. Resolve the issue by scheduling regular maintenance of plumbing equipment.

It is also better to check the thermostat valve, heater size, and correct installation.

Limited Design options

A shower head’s primary issue is its limited design and color options. Most come in lighter colors like white, creamy white, and pink.

Sometimes people add funky paint in their bathrooms and want to add fixtures and other accessories according to them.

You cannot find customized and unique colors or designs in the market according to the decoration of the interior.

Many people add new accessories and want to purchase new showers with matching colors but do not find them.

You can resolve the problem by painting their surface according to your choice.

Moreover, you can also visit the plumbing stores and tell their representatives about your required color and design.
