Can You Use Chalk Paint on Bathroom Walls? You can use chalk paint on your bathroom walls because of its rustic appearance, less preparation, odorless, and less dripping chances. Clean the surface, apply the coats of paint, and seal them with wax, polyurethane or polyacrylic coating, and lacquer.

People use them to decorate their bathroom walls because of their shabby chic texture, which gives your interior an innovative and cool appearance.

Is it safe to use chalk paint on bathroom walls?

It is safe for your bathroom walls, and you can use them without worrying about damaging consequences. These are not water-proof but water-resistant and can repel water from their surfaces.

These thrive best in humid conditions when you apply and seal them correctly.

Chalk paint is not water-proof, and water exposure cause it to wash out. You can use different sealant materials to seal their surface and prevent them from washing out.

These cannot remain on the walls when you do not apply sealants; sealant is the protective coating that acts as the barrier between the varnish and water splashes.

It increases the durability of the surfaces and prevents them from unnecessary damage. People use different sealing materials depending on their choice.

I used the wax because it is readily available. Moreover, you can also use glaze, oil-based paints, glossy sheen coating, lacquer, polyurethane, and polyacrylic sealers.

I do not prefer to apply them on the walls near the shower and bathtubs because they are highly humid.

Direct and long-term water exposure cause the wax and other sealants to come off from their bonded surfaces. Varnish washes off quickly when water splashes from these fixtures come on them.

The process is not quick, but it takes several years to damage the coats. Adding tiles, acrylic and plastic wall panels, and water-proof coats on these surfaces is better because they are water-proof and thrive better in humid areas.

Why would you use chalk paint on bathroom walls?

Chalk paints are common in homes nowadays because of their old patina-like appearance.

Rustic appearance

These paints are made up by grinding the chalks, giving the old rustic appearance to your bathroom. It contains limestone, which gives the walls a texture and matte appearance.

It looks different from other water-based and finished coatings with smooth and shiny textures. It gives an old farmhouse-like touch to your interior, which can attract onlookers.

Your interior looks modern and new because of this creative design. The finish gives the surface a textured and patina-like appearance, which does not look smooth.

You can apply it on wood, metal, tiles, concrete, and plastic surfaces. The curing time is also less, and you do not have to wait hours to use the shower and toilets after completing the painting job.

Less preparation

You can apply this paint on bathroom walls quickly because these require little or no preparation. You do not have to mix them in different containers before their application.

The stickiness is also better because of their textured and granular material. These do not require primer for their better stickiness on different surfaces.

You do not have to spend more time on surface preparation for their application. You can apply them by simply wiping the surface to remove dust.

There is no need to apply primer on the walls to coat them with chalk paint.

Less dripping

The dripping chances of these varnishes on the floor surface are less because of their texture. These have a thick consistency, and their droplets cannot come on the wall.

You do not have to cover the floor with newspaper and old cloth for their application. In addition, it also reduces the hectic cleaning procedure after the coating procedure.

It does not create a mess in the bathroom because these can stick easily to the brushes. The hard consistency decreases the chances of their droplets on floors and surrounding areas.

It can also protect your cloth and skin from splashes and stains, which are hard to remove.

Little or no odor

Wall paints usually have a strong smell, and some people are allergic to them. You can feel the strong aroma because of the volatile organic compounds.

These compounds are not safe for the environment and affect people when released into the air. These come into the air, and people can develop serious reactions after inhaling them.

I prefer chalk paint in my bathroom instead of conventional ones because these are user-friendly. These do not have a strong odor because of the absence of volatile organic compounds, which are not good for humans.

You can add them if you are allergic to conventional varnishes’ strong smell because they have little to no odor.

How do you use chalk paint on bathroom walls?

Follow the procedure for safely and correctly applying paint on bathroom walls.

Surface cleaning

Surface cleaning before paint application depends on the wall materials. You can apply them without any grinding procedure if these are dry and textured walls.

Wash them with handwashing detergent and leave them for some time to dry. You have to sand the surface if these are tiles, wood, and plastic.

These are smooth, and you have to make them granular for better adhesion. Chalky varnishes cannot stick better on smooth and slippery surfaces, and these can come off.

You can also use an electric sander to lightly sand their surface. Remove the sand dust from the walls and surroundings to proceed with the method.

Lightly brush the sanded surface to remove the sand dust from them.

Paint application

People use different tools for paint application, but I prefer a brush instead of rollers. The brush uses less and limited varnishes, while the roller consumes more.

Moreover, the brush gives your interior a textured, deep, and matte appearance. Many people avoid using brushes because they leave marks on the surface.

You can decrease the risk of application marks by using them in the correct direction. Avoid overlapping over the wet coats because it can produce swirl marks.

Dip the brush in the varnish bucket and apply it on the walls. Make the boundaries and then move from top to bottom end.

Turn on the exhaust and ceiling fans in your bathroom to quickly dry the first coat. Open the windows and door for better air circulation and drying of clear coat.

Perform the patch test after 24 to 48 hours to check the drying of the varnish. Check from the side with your finger and leave it for more time if you feel stickiness.

Apply the second coat if you do not feel any stickiness on the surface.

Sealing

Leave the second coat for 1 to 2 days for drying, depending on weather and humidity conditions in your bathroom. You cannot apply sealant on the wet surface because it mixes with paint and creates a mess.

Use the brush to apply wax on the dried clear coat surface. Buff the surface with a lint-free cloth or rag for equal wax distribution and correct application.

Buffing is also necessary to ensure wax application on every corner of the surface. Avoid using showers for at least two days after the application of sealant.

You can also use glossy paints and polyacrylic and polyurethane sealers to seal the paints. I prefer to use polyacrylic and polyurethane sealers instead of wax.

Wax is less durable, scratches easily, and water can enter inside. Moreover, you have to maintain them by applying wax coating frequently to freshen the surface.

Use water-based polyacrylic and polyurethane sealers instead of oil-based ones because chalk paint is also water-based.
