How to Remove Mold From Shower Curtain?

Shower curtains are essential because they provide privacy and keep moisture and steam inside the shower. You can get customized fabric and plastic curtains to enhance the beauty of this place.

How to Remove Mold From Shower Curtain? You can remove mold from shower curtain by using hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and vinegar and washing them with a mild detergent in the washing machine. You can also use oxygen bleach, tea tree oil, and antiseptic cleaner. However, it is better to clean them once or twice a month and avoid moisture by proper ventilation to prevent mold on these curtains.

They are more exposed to moisture and humidity, which causes mildew on the fabric and liner. In addition, it looks unattractive if an overnight guest wants to shower, and the liner there is in terrible condition.

How can you remove mold from a shower curtain?

You can remove the mold from blinds in the shower area using the following technique, which is simple and easy to apply.

Using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda

Hydrogen peroxide is a compound that can kill fungi, bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms by destroying their DNA and protein.

Baking soda is an alkaline material to remove mildew and other organisms and is readily available in the house. Remove the curtains and take 3% concentrated hydrogen peroxide and the water in a spray bottle.

Place them on a flat surface and spray the infected area where you see the mold using hydrogen peroxide in the bottle.

Let it stay 6-10 minutes to allow the solution to kill the mildew growth, and rinse the portion with water.

Take equal parts of water and baking soda and make a paste-like solution. Apply it to the fabric and scrub it gently to clean it completely.

Flip the side and scrub it from the other side again, then wash it properly. Finally, dry the blinds in the backyard and hang them again on the shower rod.

Use vinegar

You can use vinegar to clean them, as it is natural germs and bacteria cleaner, and you can use lemon juice with vinegar, which can remove the smell.

Put water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, and add a few drops of lemon juice if it is available; otherwise, white vinegar is enough to kill the mildew.

Take out the curtains from the clips and rods and lay them on the large flat surface. Spray the solution on them and leave it for 10-15 minutes to remove the microorganisms.

It is not compulsory to wash them after applying the spray because it will not cause any damage. This technique can help you to keep mildew and smell at bay and look fresh and new.

Washing detergents

I use a washing machine to clean these with mild chemical detergent. Detach the hooks attached to the rod and put the blinds in the washing machine at a moderate speed.

You can add baking soda or vinegar with detergent in the washing machine to make it more effective in getting rid of mold and bacteria from the hangings.

Check the label before putting them in the dryer, and air-dry them if they are not suitable to be put in the dryer, then dry them in the backyard or on the shower rod.

Oxygen bleach

Oxygen bleach is well-known for its sanitizing abilities and for removing stains from fabric and different fixtures. You can mix one part of oxygen bleach and three parts of water in a spray bottle.

Spray it on the area with mold, and wipe it with a wet cloth or rag after 15-20 minutes. You can also wash the hangings to remove the mildew using oxygen bleach and warm water.

Take ½-1 cup of oxygen bleach in a tub filled with warm water, and put the hangings in the tub.

Leave them for 25-30 minutes and gently rub or scrub them with a brush to clean them completely.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a non-toxic and natural disinfectant that can kill fungi and mildew from different household things.

It cannot damage its color or fabric and is an effective cleaner for mold and bacteria growth.

Take one to two tablespoons of tea tree oil, and add it to one to two cups of water. Then, use a spray bottle and apply it on the hangings and the affected area.

Scrub them using a sponge, but you can use baking soda and vinegar solution with a few drops of tea tree oil if the hangings are in worse condition and only tea tree oil failed to remove mildew.

Antiseptic cleaners

Antiseptic cleaners can clean the mold from shower curtain because of the presence of active cleaning and disinfecting agents.

They also help to remove odor, and are environment friendly, such as there do not use any harmful fumes in their formulation.

You can use them to spray on the hangings for daily cleaning and maintenance of the curtains.

They do not affect the color and design of the hangings and are safe for the users to apply them.

How often should you clean the shower curtain to remove mold?

Mold and mildew can affect the color and fabric of the curtains, and they look unattractive if you do not clean them regularly to keep the inhabitants at bay.

You can clean the hangings after two weeks or once a month, depending on the moisture level, shower usage, and ventilation in this place.

Cleaning them regularly can prolong the durability of the hangings and keep them in a new look for a long time.

In addition, you can spray them once daily with a disinfecting cleaner to avoid the smell and bacteria.

You may have to replace the hangings with a new one if the mold growth gets worse, and washing or cleaning them does not remove the mildew.

You can clean these curtains of the guest room bathroom after two to three months because this place is not used frequently, and the moisture level is less.

How can you prevent mold buildup on the shower curtain?

Mold needs moisture, warmth, and a porous surface to grow, and shower curtains have all the preferable things for them to grow there. You can prevent them from hangings by reducing the humidity level in this place.

Proper ventilation is necessary to reduce the moisture and mildew on the curtain using bathroom exhaust fans.

It is better to turn on the exhaust fan when someone is taking a shower and open the windows and doors after a hot bath.

Do not fold the hangings after the bath because it causes them to remain wet and increases the chances of mildew on the fabric.

Instead, I let them dry for some time after showering such that the air circulating in this place can remove the moisture from the hangings.

Fix the water leakage in this area because the constant moisture promotes the microorganism to the other things in the bathroom.

For example, I never hang wet towels or clothes in the shower area and avoid putting wet bathroom mats because they can cause mold.
